Sikkal Singara Velan Soorasamharam is a deeply cherished festival in Tamil Hindu tradition, marking the moment when Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva and Parvati, receives his divine weapon, the Vel, from his mother Goddess Korravai, who is often identified with Parvati. With the Vel in hand, Murugan defeats the demon Surapadman in a cosmic clash that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and the restoration of cosmic order. The victory, known as Soora Samharam, is celebrated with devotion, music, and color, and it holds particular significance at Murugan temples where the story is enacted through processions, chants, and sacred dramas.

In Sikkal Lord Skanda receives the Vetri Vel from his mother and goes to Tiruchendur Sea shore to kill the mighty SuraPadman (the mighty asura)

A lesser-known, but charming, belief associated with Soorasamharam is that before the festival, Murugan can be seen as intensely aroused by the divine mission. This intense emotion is described as perspiration that arises on the statue of Panchaloham Murugan in the Sikkal Singaravel Murugan temple, and it is said to persist even after the priest wipes the idol’s face. Many devotees regard this as a sign of Murugan’s ardent determination and vitality, underscoring the deity’s human-like readiness and divine power working together to vanquish darkness.

The festival features grand temple processions and chariots, kavadi carrying devotees, and offerings of milk, honey, flowers, and sweets. The music of nadaswaram and other traditional drums fills the air, while devotional songs recount Murugan’s valor and wisdom. Dramatic reenactments of the Surapadman myth bring the legend to life for worshippers and visitors, helping to pass the story from generation to generation.
